MAΘ STATE CONVENTION

This year's MAΘ state convention will be held at Memphis University School!

EVENTS HELD THIS YEAR

  • Individual

    • Consists of 30 multiple-choice questions​

    • Options A-E, where E is "None of the above (NOTA)"

    • 1 hour allotted

    • Graded with this scale: +4 for a correct answer, -1 for an incorrect answer, 0 for a blank answer

    • NO CALCULATORS 

  • Ciphering

    • 12 questions, three minutes for each question

    • Solving it in the first minute: +12; second minute: +8; third minute: +4

    • NO CALCULATORS​

  • Chalk Talk

    • 7 minutes​

    • Each school can have one presenter for each level

    • NO reference materials other than one 3" by 5" card

    • THIS YEAR'S THEMES

  • Interschool

    • ALL school members take this test​

    • Up to 1 sponsor may help

    • Tests your knowledge in math, trivia, and various puzzles

    • NO outside resources permitted

  • School bowl

    • 4 individuals in one team
    • ​12 open-response questions administered one at a time​
    • 4 minute time limit per question
    • +16 in the first minute, +12 in the second minute, +8 in the third minute, +4 in the fourth minute
  • Poster

    • Create a poster based on the theme​ before the competition (must also include math)
    • All materials except glitter can be used
    • No attachments to board with glue, tape, or any other adhesive
  • Speed

    • 25 open-response problems

    • 15 minute test 

    • No calculus included

    • +1 correct answer; no penalty for wrong answers or unanswered questions

  • Mental

    • 8 minutes allotted 

    • 40 open-response problems

    • No calculus or trigonometry

    • NO writing on the test other than the answer (disqualification!)

    • No erasures may be made to an answer once written

    • MUST use a blue or black pen

    • +5 for each correct answer; +1 for each skipped question; for each wrong answer
